Next week, patrons at the Masters will notice some changes to Augusta National Golf Club, including a redesigned Par-3 Course, a new patron entrance and, yes, a 40-yard extension to the famed 13th hole. Many of the changes were envisioned around the turn of the century.
It’s all part of “The Plan,” which was publicly acknowledged at the 2016 Masters by Billy Payne, then chairman of Augusta National. “Corporately, we plan 20 years down the road,” Payne said.
What will the next 20 years look like? Over the past year, Senior Writer Joel Beall engaged an array of Augusta National members in conversations about the club's future, including potential plans to add a second golf course as well as on-site accommodations for tournament players. He also inquired about the club’s sense of duty to contend with LIV, and the club’s role in the ongoing debate over the distance the golf ball flies.
But before you can understand where Augusta National is going, you need to understand the diametric reins of the club's most recent chairmen. Beall covered it all in our most popular story of March, “Augusta National’s expansion debate—a second course, more housing, and even more influence.” |
