Biography
Margaret Babbitt was born in New Haven, CT and educated at Kirkland College (now Hamilton College) where she studied art history and studio art. After college she worked at the Yale University Art Gallery and for a small New York design firm before moving to Cape Cod to focus on her art. Her interest has always centered on shoreline imagery - landscapes, seascapes, and associated architectural forms. Her treatment of these images in watercolor and serigraphy brought early recognition and a rapidly growing audience of collectors throughout the United States, as well as in Europe and Japan.
Babbitt's work has been exhibited in multiple solo and group shows in fine art galleries across the country. She has also participated in numerous prestigious juried exhibitions, including those sponsored by the Audubon Artists, the American Artists Professional League, Silvermine Guild and the Society of American Graphic Artists. Her art is in many private and corporate collections, including IBM, the Ford Motor Company, Champion International, Pepsico, Equitable Life Assurance Company and General Motors.
After a period working in the non-profit sector, Babbitt shifted her focus to acrylic landscape paintings. These paintings explore the merger of land, water and sky, and capture the light and atmosphere of coastal saltmarshes.
"My childhood was spent on the marshes, catching fiddler crabs and watching herons take flight. I paint contemporary landscape paintings that explore the merger of land, water and sky. There is a physical emptiness in my paintings, as I look for places people have just been or are about to enter. Yet while the day may be just beginning or ending, the heron is just beyond a bend in the water or the next bit of marsh grass."
Her paintings have been accepted into numerous national juried exhibitions, and she has recently been named a Signature Member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Association.
