Marina premièred on September 21, 1855. In this zarzuela, a young couple who are secretly in love see their future threatened by insinuations and misunderstandings. The libretto was by Francisco Camprodón, a successful writer of drama at that time. In 1870, at the suggestion of tenor Enrico Tamberlick, Arrieta converted his zarzuela – which was by then most successful – into an opera. Since Camprodón had recently died, he turned to Miguel Ramos Carrión to adapt the libretto. Accordingly, the première took place at the Teatro Real in March 1871. In spite of the popularity of the opera version, the zarzuela did not disappear. The seventh Edition of the libretto was published in 1887, seventeen years after it had been transformed into an opera. So it seems that there was room for both versions on the stage. One must take into account that the plot of the zarzuela as adapted to the opera was significantly abridged by Ramos Carrión so that aspects of the story, as explained in the spoken part of the original text, are surmised here. As Emilio Cotarelo pointed out in his day, Marina is the only example of a «zarzuela isabelina» which has remained in the repertoire, it can be compared with Don Juan Tenorio by Zorilla, La canción del pirata by Espronceda or Bécquer’s “Oscuras golondrinas”.
