G'day, Mark Gibson here. When I started as your ABC Radio Breakfast presenter in January, I was keen to take the show on the road. I wanted to get out into the community and meet as many of you as possible.
With our glorious summer weather in full swing, I proposed the idea of broadcasting from 10 beaches in 10 weeks. Oh, and I told ABC management that I’d like my final ‘Breakfast at the beach’ to be from Rottnest Island. Luckily, they said yes!
From enjoying the passionate banter between mayors, all explaining why their beach is the best, to highlighting important community issues, such as the mystery of the discoloured water at Mullaloo, it has been a wonderful experience.
We reminisced about the history of our favourite coastal suburbs and met some fascinating characters along the way - swimmers, surfers, walkers, riders, a choir, even a beach poet!
There were predictable highlights, such as broadcasting among the iconic sculptures at Cottesloe Beach and admiring the beauty of Scarborough at sunrise.
There was also spontaneity and fun, like when the swimmers at Hillarys convinced me to jump into the water during the 6am news, and when Pauline, and when Coogee local Pauline greeted us with freshly baked muffins!
From Rockingham to Rottnest, what I will remember most fondly is the the warm hospitality of the communities we visited. Thank you for welcoming us, for sharing your stories and for listening to ABC Radio Perth. We really do appreciate it.
Now it’s over to you - have your say and vote for your favourite beach here!
