Get crafty at DC’s only museum of contemporary craft and decorative arts. Learn three embroidery stitches before creating your own embroidery masterpiece using pre-drafted patterns. Admission includes light snacks, crafting materials, two drinks from ANXO, and after-hours access to the Smithsonian American Art Musem's Renwick Gallery.

Tickets will be available beginning November 22.  Attendees must be 21 or older to attend and show a valid ID at the door.

Join us to watch ongoing treatment of James Hampton's The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly in a temporary conservation space on the museum’s first floor. In this recurring program, conservators and registrars at SAAM talk with the public about the intricate methods and materials used by Hampton as they do their work.

Virtual Beyond the Studio Workshop: Paper Wreath Making
Sunday, December 10, 1 – 2 p.m.

Join Emily Paluska of Revery Paper Flora for the return of her popular paper flower making workshop and learn the fundamentals of creating a one-of-a-kind paper wreath inspired by winter plants. 

Tickets include the cost of materials needed for the activity, instructions, and postage. Materials kits will be shipped to participants in advance of the program.  Participants must register by 7 p.m. ET on November 26 as space is limited.   If you are outside of the US, please contact SAAMPrograms@si.edu before registering.

Kick off your day on a creative note with Art in the A.M., where children ages 0-5 can learn, connect, and create with SAAM.  Attendees will listen to a reading of Peter H. Reynolds’ ish in the Luce Foundation Center and learn more about the theme of the book.

Children and their caregivers will then view selected pieces from the museum’s collection, reflecting on each artwork’s color, lines, and images before creating their own ish-inspired craft. Space is limited and registration is required.  

Go in-depth with Saisha Grayson, curator of time-based media at SAAM, as she discusses the years-long curatorial process behind Musical Thinking: New Video Art and Sonic Strategies. Learn about her reasons for featuring selected artists and video art, with a special focus on auditory artworks and how they merge together in this evocative and emotionally resonant exhibition.

Art Bites Gallery Talk
Friday, December 22, 12:15 – 12:45 p.m.

Join SAAM’s research fellows for this lunchtime series of gallery talks as they share new discoveries about artworks on view. Learn the stories behind these objects and how each one tells us about America’s ever-changing culture. Kelly-Christina Grant, the Terra Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in American Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, discusses Loïs Mailou Jones’ Les Fétiches.
