What’s the First Movie That Really Scared You?

Jurassic Park T-rex
While horror movies are designed to scare, many of us had our first frightening cinema experience unintentionally. Maybe we were too young to be watching that particular film, or what was marketed as a kid's movie was surprisingly terrifying. What was the first film that taught you movies could unsettle?

Things We Saw Today: Starbucks to Close All 8,000 Locations for One Day to Train Staff About Racial Bias

Starbucks logo
By now, we've all heard about the preposterous incident that occurred at a Philadelphia Starbucks. Last week, two black men entered the Starbucks asking to use the bathroom as they waited for someone, and were denied. When they sat to wait for their friend, a Starbucks employee called the police, and the two men were arrested for trespassing. It's something that would likely never have happened had it been two white men.

Spanning Genres: The Lasting Influence of The Giver Author Lois Lowry and Her Work

Lowry’s most iconic works are the sorts of mandatory middle-school fare that stick with you longer than you’d expect; you probably remember the themes of The Giver better than you realize. Her lesser-known books are cheerful slice-of-life novels, like the nine-book Anastasia series, that wouldn’t be out of place in Beverly Cleary’s back-catalog. Taken together, Lowry’s body of work shows her awareness of what makes writing for young readers unique.

It's an exciting day in movies!
