| | On the winds of change Happy New Year, Baltimore! That agonizing Ravens loss aside, we hope you're having a great start to 2023. Your (and my) overflowing inboxes underscore the reality of things coming around in the new year, as we get back to work and set a tone for the 12 months to come. Our government offices are doing that, too, as today's swearings-in of Baltimore City's State's Attorney Ivan Bates and Maryland's Attorney General Anthony G. Brown (the state's first Black AG) indicate. We caught up with a cohort of business- and tech-related power moves from the end of last year in an article below. You'll also see below a story about a unionization drive at Microsoft-owned ZeniMax Studios, which includes a facility in Hunt Valley. All of these aforementioned changes and developments have me thinking broadly about the changing of the guard across industries and positions in Baltimore — and what processes, technical or otherwise, make these changes possible. So, my questions to you to kick off 2023 are: How are things changing at your companies and organizations? Are you experiencing any staff turnover at any level? How are you managing transitions, and has software made it possible? Are you facing (or leading) efforts to unionize or otherwise protect your workers? As today is the first day in our Navigating a (Possible) Recession Month, I'm especially curious to hear from those of you experiencing market forces' impact on your rosters, leadership, workers, budgets and boards. Let us know by emailing baltimore@technical.ly or responding to this email, and we wish you a new year with as few difficult transitions as possible. — Technical.ly editor Sameer Rao (sameer@technical.ly) | | | Top Stories | By Transitioning from a holiday break to once again working from home can be a challenge.
