Editor's Notes

There's some kinda creepy news about deepfakes today.

I know what you're thinking. Is there any news about deepfakes that's not creepy? And you have a point. But feels particularly like it could wreak havoc.

It's called deepfake geography, which means there are AI-generated images of landscapes, in both city and country. So, basically, fake satellite images. As The Verge explains, this could open the door for hoaxes about wildfires and floods, or even be used against each other by geopolitical foes.

It's an example of how deepfakes are becoming more ubiquitious, and find more use cases. But we at Technical.ly believe knowledge can help with this. We want to understand it better, so we can get a handle on the tech involved here, and the scope of the issues it creates. Maybe it even hep us avoid dystopia.

Are you working on deepfakes or do you know anyone we should talk to? Reply here or email us at baltimore@technical.ly
