Galerie Hiltawsky is thrilled to present this exhibition, which celebrates the 40-year anniversary of David Bowie’s album Heroes. Perhaps the most widely known album of Bowie’s, it was produced and launched in 1977 at Hansa Studios, Berlin.
Masayoshi Sukita began photographing David Bowie in 1972 and this association continued for a total of 40 years. Sukita is one of Japan’s most renowned and celebrated photographers. |

In 1977, David Bowie and Iggy Pop travelled to Japan to promote Iggy Pop’s new album The Idiot, which Bowie had produced. It was during this trip and a daylong photo session that they met Masayoshi Sukita who spent half a day photographing David Bowie and the other half with Iggy Pop.
The day evolved inspirationally with both musicians bouncing off one other so that the photo shoot developed into a performance. It was several months later that the photographs created during this session were chosen for the album cover of Heroes.
This exhibition showcases photographs from that photo shoot as well as earlier photographs by Masayoshi Sukita from the Ziggy Stardust period.
The exhibition, David Bowie / Masayoshi Sukita: 40th Anniversary of Heroes, is presented in collaboration with ONO Arte Contemporanea, Bologna. |
