Hope everybody enjoyed their Labor Day! This is Dan Schneier here as Frank Stampfl, Scott White and Chris Towers earned themselves a day to relax and recharge. It was a very quiet night in baseball on Monday, but we'll get to some of the biggest news, notes and developments as we try to prepare for the final stretch run. I know some of you have started your first playoff series, others are on a bye and the Roto leagues are here to grind out those final few weeks -- we're here to help. |
Of course, as always, you can follow to make sure you get the latest episodes of Fantasy Baseball Today right when they drop on Apple and Spotify. |

Schwindel at it again |
On Sunday's Fantasy Baseball Today, Frank compared the rise of Cubs 1B Frank Schwindel to that of Christian Walker. Both prospects had aged a bit in the minors but went on to prove they can hit in the majors. Schwindel's surprising second half continued on Monday night. He went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead RBI single to give the Cubs a 4-3 win over the Reds. |
The 29-year-old is now hitting .343/.386/.650 with Chicago. He's bordering on must-add and in shallower leagues he should be in your lineups. Ride the hot hand. |

Scherzer doesn't skip a beat |
|
It was one of the guttiest performances of the year last Wednesday when Dodgers SP Max Scherzer punched out nine batters on just 76 pitches through six innings before leaving with a hamstring injury. There was speculation at first that this injury could sideline Scherzer -- at an inopportune time during the Fantasy playoffs -- but that speculation was put to rest on Monday. |
The 37-year-old righty struck out a whopping 13 batters over eight scoreless (one unearned run) innings against the Cardinals. Max Scherzer fanned 13 while holding the Cardinals to just one unearned run over eight innings in the Dodgers' 5-1 win Monday. After allowing a leadoff double to Tommy Edman, Scherzer retired 16 of the next 17 Cardinals hitters in this game. He also dominated under the hood numbers with 25 swinging strikes induced. |
Fun fact: Scherzer now moved into No. 2 all-time with 36 10-plus strikeout single games (since 1893). Scherzer has a 5-0 record with a 1.05 ERA and 0.77 WHIP (63 to 5 strikeout to walk ratio) in 43 innings since being traded to the Dodgers. He is arguably the SP1 in Fantasy right now and will likely enter 2022 drafts as a borderline first-round pick. |

More news and notes |
A.J. Alexy gave up just one hit over six shutout innings for the Rangers. The SP prospect has been excellent since being called up and is worth a look in deeper leagues.Jake Meyers had a home run and four RBI on Monday. He now has 21 RBI in just 28 games with a .319 average. He's also worth a look in deeper leagues. |
Buxton bounces back |
Chris Towers favorite Byron Buxton has had another bad luck season. After starting the year red hot, and looking like an absolute breakout pick, Buxton got hurt (we know -- again). Since returning from the IL on Aug. 27, Buxton hasn't been the same player we saw before the injury. On Monday, he finally hit his first homer since returning. Buxton was 2 for 5 with a homer to help the Twins to a 5-2 victory over the Indians. |
