Mayhem on the mainline: Relief coming soon to I-10 at College

By KELLY P. KISSEL | Metro editor

The mayhem at I-10's exit to College Drive could be a thing of the past in January. State highway officials have updated their timetable for work at the I-10/I-12 split, so someday relatively soon I-10's westbound motorists won't have to cross I-12 traffic to reach their exit. (At the same time, I-12 motorists merge left into I-10's main lines.)

The state's highways chief says if Baton Rouge sees back-to-back hurricanes this summer and fall, work might be delayed.

Here's a refresher on how the new path will look to westbound motorists.

East Baton Rouge schools will hire armed guards for its junior high and high school campuses. The local school district's security chief had wanted the new guards to be unarmed, but the school board voted last week 6-1 to put guns in their hands. The thinking is that an armed guard would be more likely to respond quickly if something went awry.

Who should have access to sexually oriented books at the Livingston Parish? The local library board last night took up an agenda item labeled "Book content." Should the young adult section include books titled "Dating and Sex" and "Polygamy" and the like?
