Largely absent from the debate among the four Republicans hoping to win the nomination in the 4th Congressional District was any discussion of their potential opponent in November, Democrat Ben McAdams. Instead, the four spent most of their time on Monday trying to burnish their conservative bona fides, cozying up to President Donald Trump and attacking Marxists, socialists, Antifa and other perceived threats to America.

NATIONAL HEADLINES

Trump goes full law and order

President Trump threatened Monday to send the U.S. military into states that don't do enough to quell civil unrest [Bloomberg].

Trump called the nation's governors "weak" in their response to protests and urged them to use force against protesters [WaPo].

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker called on President Trump to dial back his incendiary rhetoric during a conference call on Monday [Politico].

Military police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters so Trump could walk across the street for a photo-op outside St. John's Church [New York Times].


Social media

Facebook employees staged a "virtual walkout" on Monday to protest the company's decision not to take action against President Trump's provocative messages [Axios].

A white nationalist group was discovered to be posing as Antifa on Twitter and calling for violence [NBC News].

54 percent of Americans support Twitter flagging one of President Trump's tweets as violating the social media platform's rules on glorifying violence [Axios].


It's still an election year

Voters in nine states cast ballots Tuesday in primary elections amid unrest and a global pandemic [Politico].

Republicans are worried President Trump's attacks on voting by mail will hurt them in the November elections [New York Times].


Out of sight

Dr. Anthony Fauci says he hasn't spoken with President Trump in two weeks [CNN].


Economy

It will take the U.S. economy more than a decade to recover from the coronavirus. The virus will cost the economy more than $8 trillion [CNBC].

U.S. manufacturing activity starts to increase after hitting an 11-year low [Reuters].

Delta Airlines has 2,300 more pilots than it needs to operate a reduced schedule [Bloomberg].

Utah housing building permits decreased from 3,070 in March to 2,089 in April, a 32% decrease. Interestingly, this came just after a March in which the greater Salt Lake City area (MSA) saw the highest number of housing permits in decades, and perhaps ever over 1,500. The next month, they plummeted: April saw a decrease to just over 800.
