McCarthy faces vote to oust him as House Speaker |
Republican Kevin McCarthy is facing a vote this afternoon that could oust him as House speaker, triggered by hardline members of his party angry with him for working with Democrats to avert a government shutdown last weekend. Ahead of the vote, McCarthy said he couldn’t understand why a “handful of Republicans” would join Democrats to determine who gets to serve as speaker. “They’re turning the floor over to the Democrats,” he added. Matt Gaetz, the conservative Florida lawmaker and fierce McCarthy critic, forced the vote by filing a motion to vacate on Monday. Under the deal McCarthy made to become speaker back in January, any single member could bring a motion to vacate against him. It would be the first time in U.S. history that a speaker has been voted out. If enough Republicans vote against him, McCarthy would need some Democrats to side with him to remain speaker. But before the vote, McCarthy ruled out cutting a deal with the other party to keep his job. Here’s the list of McCarthy’s possible successors. |

Suspect charged in kidnapping of 9-year-old girl from campground |
A 46-year-old man has been charged with kidnapping Charlotte Sena, the 9-year-old girl who was found alive two days after she vanished while riding her bike at a campground in upstate New York, authorities said. Craig Nelson Ross Jr. was arraigned overnight on a charge of first-degree kidnapping, and is being held at Saratoga County jail without bail. Additional charges are likely, state police said. The suspect was arrested after he allegedly dropped off a ransom note at the Sena family’s home early Monday morning, and left a fingerprint that investigators matched to a DWI arrest from 1999, Gov. Kathy Hochul said at a news conference last night. Charlotte was found hidden in a cupboard inside a trailer where the suspect lived, at a property where his mother also resides, Hochul said. Charlotte’s family thanked authorities and shared a message of relief. “We are thrilled that she is home and we understand that the outcome is not what every family gets,” Jené Sena, Charlotte's aunt, said in a statement. |
Hunter Biden pleads not guilty to federal gun charges |
Hunter Biden entered a not guilty plea to three firearms charges today at his arraignment in a Delaware federal court. President Joe Biden’s son was indicted last month on those counts, related to the alleged possession of a firearm while using illegal drugs, after his plea deal on tax and gun charges collapsed in July. The younger Biden had asked to appear virtually at the arraignment, but the judge rejected that request, saying he “should not receive special treatment.” Special counsel David Weiss could refile the tax charges, or bring new ones, against Hunter Biden in the coming month, legal experts say. |

Trump says he will take the witness stand at civil fraud trial |
Former President Donald Trump vowed to testify as he appeared in court for the second day of his $250 million civil fraud lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James. “Yes I will. At the appropriate time, I will,” Trump told reporters outside the courtroom. He also maintained “there was absolutely no fraud,” and called the case against him “a scam.” On the stand today, former Trump accountant Donald Bender continued his testimony, telling the court that he relied on information directly from Trump and his company when compiling Trump’s personal financial statements. The judge in this case has already ruled that Trump committed fraud and falsely inflated his net worth for years. The trial will determine whether, and how much Trump will have to pay in penalties, and could cost him control of some of his most prized properties. Here are the highlights from day one of the trial. |
Congressman carjacked at gunpoint in Washington, D.C. |
Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, said he was carjacked by three armed assailants wearing masks, as he was parking outside his apartment about a mile from the U.S. Capitol Monday night. “Three guys came out of nowhere and they pointed guns at me,” Cuellar said today. “So they said they wanted my car. I said, ‘Sure.’” Cuellar was unharmed, and said he did not believe the assailants knew he was a congressman. Police recovered the car and its contents a few hours later. "They recovered the car. They recovered everything. What really got me upset was they took my sushi,” Cuellar said. No arrests have been made, and U.S. Capitol Police say they are working to find the three assailants. |
