The HR Leader
A recent Conference Board study revealed that nearly all chief human resources officers surveyed support the continuation of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, despite some high-profile companies like Tractor Supply scaling back their efforts. Most organizations are opting to continue with DEI because of its innovative, cultural and economic benefits, with Kantar DEI Chief Valeria Piaggio noting that “companies making decisions today that are not in line with where growth is coming from are jeopardizing their future, when we look at the demographics of their young workforce and their young shoppers.”

American Cinematheque's Los Feliz Theatre is presenting a film series, "Silents Synced," which will present movies like the 102-year-old "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror," but with modern soundtracks filled with tracks by Radiohead, R.E.M. and more, giving a new vibe to old flicks. "I'm targeting music fans because it's part of my theory that movie-loving people are already coming so let's try expanding our audience and get other people to experience cinema," says the film's creator Josh Frank.

Welcome to Friday Faves! Every Friday, I spotlight books, podcasts, email newsletters, documentaries or other content pieces that I enjoy. I also share suggestions that I get from you. Got a favorite for your peers? Send it to me. I may include it here for a future column.

Aloha dear SmartBrief on Workforce readers! Can you believe it’s the final weekend of September? I’ll be spending it with a new fave I discovered this week.

The Deserter, from the New York Times Magazine. I just started this but I am already caught up in the lives of Ivan and Anna. Here's the description from the NYT: “In ‘The Deserter,’ the journalist Sarah A. Topol reports the story of Ivan, a deserter who served as a captain in the Russian Army, fought in Ukraine and then ultimately fled the war and his country with his wife, Anna. (Ivan and Anna are pseudonyms used for their protection.)”

Folks, this is not a novel. It’s not entertainment. It is rigorous and raw. It will grab you by the brain and draw you in. Topol does a masterful job of reporting this story. If you prefer to listen to it, here’s the podcast

Another podcast you might enjoy comes from my friend and colleague Sean McMahon. In this week’s Renewable Energy SmartPod episode, Sean talks with Battery Council International President and Executive Director Roger Miksad who explains how batteries of various chemistries are advancing to power things like data centers, EVs, microgrids and more. Miksad also provides an update on the circular economy for batteries and highlights how policies like the Inflation Reduction Act and the proposed USA Batteries Act are shaping the future of the battery industry.

How are you feeding your brain? Drop me a line and let me know what you are reading, watching or listening to.

Do you love this brief? Share it with others. Want different stories? Something about it bug you? Tell me. In the words of Frasier Crane, “I’m listening.”
