McLaren has denied a report that Audi has agreed to a corporate takeover that would take control of both its road car and racing operations – including its Formula 1 team.

This development comes against a background of the Volkswagen Group’s push to enter F1, with Porsche also in the frame with a possible tie-up with Red Bull. Both Porsche and Audi CEOs have made positive noises about F1 in recent weeks, leaving one to wonder if there’s some kind of internal ‘race’ going on to land a deal first.

The McLaren denial isn’t an end to this story – just because it’s refuted news that a takeover deal has been done doesn’t mean that it, or a partnership deal, won’t happen in the future.
