MEAT BOSSES PLACED BETS ON WORKER COVID COUNT A wrongful death lawsuit tied to COVID-19 infections at Tyson Foods’ largest pork processing plant accuses the meatpacking giant of ordering employees to come to work while supervisors privately bet money on how many would get infected with the coronavirus. The family of Isidro Fernandez filed the lawsuit in August saying that Fernandez was exposed to the virus when he reported for work at the Tyson plant in Waterloo, Iowa. Fernandez died in April from COVID-19 complications, leaving behind a wife and children. [HuffPost]
SENATORS TAKE AIM AT MASSIVE TRUMP ARMS DEAL A bipartisan group of senators will attempt to block part of outgoing President Donald Trump’s massive weapons sale to the United Arab Emirates with a bill to be released this week, two sources with knowledge of their plans told HuffPost. The coalition includes Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which suggests the plan will receive broad support from Democrats. [HuffPost]
'I'M BEGGING YOU TO STAY HOME THIS YEAR' In early April, my mother received a call from the memory care facility that my dad had tested positive for COVID-19. Two weeks later, he was dead. Under normal circumstances, the holidays are a time for visiting family members to share special moments, celebrate cherished traditions and give gifts. But this holiday season, amid the sharp rise of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., the best gift you can give your family and friends is to stay at home. You just may save their lives. [HuffPost] |

A QUARTER MILLION AMERICANS HAVE DIED FROM COVID-19 A quarter of a million Americans have died from COVID-19. The milestone follows a stunning surge in cases this fall, with several states reporting record high hospitalization rates. The resultant economic crisis has created untenable situations for Black and brown survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, making it more likely for them to return to abusers. And a top Trump health official is "losing sleep" over where America is. [HuffPost]
ATLANTA MAYOR: TRUMP WOULD 'EAT HIS CHILDREN' Atlanta’s Democratic Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms ripped Trump over his willingness to throw fellow Republicans under the bus when they don’t agree 100% with his agenda. “He will eat his own children, I’m sure, if he found it prudent,” Bottoms told CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. Meanwhile, one of Trump's lawyers slammed him as an "idiot" in an unearthed Facebook post. [HuffPost]
GOP CONFIRMS ANOTHER UNQUALIFIED TRUMP COURT PICK The Senate spent Wednesday afternoon confirming Kathryn Kimball Mizelle to a lifetime seat on the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. Every Republican present voted yes. Every Democrat present voted no. She is rated “not qualified” by the American Bar Association, because she doesn’t meet the requirement of at least 12 years of experience practicing law. Mizelle has been practicing law only since 2012. [HuffPost] |

WHAT'S BREWING
TRUMP CAMPAIGN ASKS JUDGE TO DISENFRANCHISE UP TO 1.5 MILLION VOTERS Trump’s presidential campaign would like a federal judge to disenfranchise up to 1.5 million Pennsylvania voters and declare Trump the winner of the commonwealth’s Electoral College votes, despite his loss. In recent days, his campaign has also welcomed the idea of disenfranchising all of the voters of Nevada, and pushed to have Michigan’s 16 electoral votes awarded by its Republican legislature. Trump's brazen attempts to steal the election aren't just stupid -- they're extremely dangerous. [HuffPost]
CALIFORNIA GOV. NEWSOM IN HOT WATER OVER DINNER PARTY California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has found himself in the same hot water that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was in after her hair salon trip this summer, in his case for a dinner party at a Napa County ultra-exclusive French restaurant that bucked the tenor of his own COVID-19 safety advice. Newsom apologized for setting a bad example. This comes as newlyweds increasingly express regret over superspreader weddings that are fueling outbreaks. [HuffPost]
FBI INVESTIGATING TEXAS AG OVER BRIBERY CLAIMS The FBI is investigating allegations that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton used his office to benefit a wealthy donor. Federal agents are apparently looking into claims by former members of Paxton’s staff that the high-profile Republican committed bribery, abuse of office and other crimes to help Austin real estate developer Nate Paul. JUDGE ORDERS TRUMP TO STOP EXPELLING CHILDREN A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to stop expelling immigrant children who cross the southern border alone, halting a policy that has resulted in thousands of rapid deportations of minors during the coronavirus pandemic. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan issued a preliminary injunction sought by legal groups suing on behalf of children whom the government sought to expel before they could request asylum or other protections under federal law. [AP]
TROOP REDUCTIONS 'FRAUGHT WITH RISK' U.S. troop withdrawals ordered by Trump this week from Afghanistan and Iraq are “fraught with risk,” but the military will not hesitate to strike back if extremists attempt to undermine the transition to a smaller U.S. force in those countries, the newly installed acting secretary of defense Christopher Miller said. Many disagree. “It sends a clear signal to the Taliban” and strengthens their hand in negotiations with the Kabul government, said Chuck Hagel, a Republican who served as defense secretary in the Obama administration. [AP]
NEW YORK SETTLES WITH NRA The National Rifle Association agreed to a five-year ban on doing insurance business in New York state and will pay a $2.5 million civil fine to settle charges it sold insurance to members without a license and concealed how it routinely kept some premiums for itself. New York’s Department of Financial Services said the gun rights group had violated various state insurance laws and regulations through its sale of insurance products. [Reuters] |
