Virtual, interactive training to increase interdepartmental collaboration

CMS has decided to extend the deadline for appellants who wish to take advantage of a settlement option for a low volume of pending appeals at the third and/or fourth levels of appeal.

 

CMS: Hospice election statements lack required information or have other vulnerabilities


After a stratified random sample review of hospice election statements and certifications of terminal illness, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) reports that more than one-third of hospice General Inpatient (GIP) stays lack required information or had other vulnerabilities.

The improper and, at times, unethical and illegal use of antipsychotic medications (APM) to sedate residents who exhibit challenging behaviors undermines the noble efforts of caregivers and facilities, decreases the quality of life for residents, in rare cases causes irrevocable health issues or even death, and compromises the trust and care that residents and their families should be able to take for granted. A great deal of progress has been made in curbing the practice of resorting to APMs to calm distressed residents in long-term care (LTC) facilities, but recent studies have demonstrated that there is still room for improvement.
