For the first-ever 5G for Change Hackathon, The Webby Awards challenged teams around the world to answer the following brief: what do you want to fix? And how can 5G and the internet help you fix it? After receiving over 150 brilliant, creative submissions, their academy hand-selected only five finalists to pitch to our judges on April 29th in New York City: Team Mayday, Team Frame Perfect, Team Whose Metaverse?, Team MRM and Team DataScape.
Meet the five finalists and read all about their pitches:
Team Mayday: Hailing from the Boston and New York areas, this team proposed Mayday, an app that would help people with disabilities in crisis by connecting them with emergency responders. Learn more about their pitch.
Team Frame Perfect: As a team that met while attending the University of Guyana, the FramePerfect team believes the deforestation problem in Guyana can be solved through AI and sound monitoring devices. Learn more about their pitch.
Team Whose Metaverse?: This team, made up of a VR pioneer and innovator are championing the next generation of metaverse creators by building maker spaces in underserved communities. Learn more about their pitch.
Team MRM: As a team working in remote and hybrid ways, the MRM Salt Lake City team aims to help people with hearing disabilities navigate video calls by using an AI-powered ASL translator. Learn more about their pitch.
Team DataScape: With a background in gaming, the DataScape team is on a mission to address the challenges of aging infrastructure through an app that uses user-generated data on infrastructure issues to enable predictive maintenance. Learn more about their pitch.
The winning team will be announced on stage at the 26th Annual Webby Awards on Monday, May 16th, and will win a $50,000 grand prize!
