Josh Coates on Mormonr and answering the "hard questions"
Good morning. Today's temperatures:
Salt Lake City: 46 - 70° St. George: 62 - 97° Logan: 46 - 75° It's been 40 years since the movie "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” came out. To celebrate, CenturyLink conducted a study looking into the most popular Steven Spielberg film in every state based off of Google search trends, as my colleague Lottie Johnson wrote. So what is Utah’s favorite Spielberg movie? The 1981 Indiana Jones blockbuster, “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” won by a slim margin. Also on our minds today: Extreme weather across the U.S., a massive Redfin layoff and Tony Finau entering the U.S. Open. |
| Meet the tech titan who started Mormonr to answer the 'hard questions' |
|
| | For years, tech star Josh Coates was the Willy Wonka of Silicon Slopes. Now, he's doing something a little different. Coates recently launched Mormonr, a meme account and a site that answers some of the more controversial questions about the culture, doctrine and history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's also a comprehensive database of primary-source records related to complex faith-related topics. “It’s never been done before and it just seems like something that should exist,” Coates says. “Mormonr is one of those things that is intended to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable,” he says. “We want to challenge people with data ... but do so in a safe and faithful context.” |

| Former Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and former president of the World Trade Center Utah Derek Miller responded to the Utah State Flag Task Force's initiative to design a new state flag. "We observe the discussions around the question of changing the state flag with its prominent beehive symbol," Herbert and Miller write. In response, they asked, "Why is the state considering abandoning the symbol that Utah is known for?" Herbert and Miller argue that the beehive represents Utah’s history and heritage as well as Utahns' industry and prosperity. "Utah is the Beehive State, and the beehive is a symbol worth saving," they wrote. Read more about what the beehive on the Utah flag represents.
