Dear reader, The memes started just minutes into Tuesday night’s presidential debate. The internet lit up with viral takes on everything from Donald Trump’s absurd claims about pet-eating and baby executions to Kamala Harris’s Math Lady–esque facial expressions and “Talk about extreme!” brush-off. By Wednesday morning, pollsters and mainstream media had largely declared Harris the winner. And while a second Trump ascendancy doesn’t seem nearly as likely as it did with Sleepy Joe in the mix, there are still 51 days to go, and seven swing states left to lure, until the election on November 5. The memes are a lot more amusing than the legacy of Trump’s first stint in the White House, which continues to give his opponents a lot to worry about (see: the criminalization of abortion, the silencing of whistleblowers and the storming of the Capitol Building, for starters). Would a Trump win lead to an exodus of progressive Americans? It did the first time, as we covered in our 2017 story “The Trump Dodgers,” about progressive Americans booking it for the border. A growing number of left-leaning Americans, outraged by the politics at home, have decamped for Canada. Meet eight new Toronto arrivals |
INTERVIEWS BY CHRISTINA GONZALES, ERICA LENTI AND LUC RINALDI | MAY 1, 2017 |
Democrats always threaten to move to Canada when a Republican wins the presidency. In the days and months following Donald Trump’s 2016 win, many left-leaning Americans made good on that promise and headed north toward more progressive pastures. Shortly after the 45th presidential inauguration, Toronto Life spoke with several of the defectors—students and professionals, aspiring Canadians and expats—to find out more about their big move and their hopes for the future. |
