Dear Reader:

I thank those who have donated to the Middle East Forum in 2021 – and invite those who have not yet done so to send a tax-deductible contribution, most easily by clicking here.

In recent years, we have evolved from a traditional think tank to a think & action tank: inspiring the Israel Defense Forces’ new battlefield victory doctrine; blocking Islamists from weakening U.S. counter-terrorism laws; chasing unrepentant terrorists away from U.S. universities; and playing a key role in the designation of Al Jazeera as a Qatari agent.

Yet our core mission remains our intellectual output, which operates with support from readers and webinar viewers like you.

Our experts – staff, fellows and commissioned writers – use our platform to research and report on the Middle East, free from political narratives and bias, and unafraid of cancel culture. We bring intellectual curiosity and an unrelenting drive to uncover the facts, while providing original ideas and compelling analyses to policy-makers, policy-influencers, and the general public.

Shaping Public Opinion
Writings – We have published 405 articles and counting in 2021 on topics ranging from Qatar’s influence on Afghanistan and the limits of Israel’s Iron Dome, to the radicalization of Muslim children and the narrowing Saudi gender gap. Our work appeared in mass publications such as Bloomberg  and The Wall Street Journal; D.C.-focused publications such as The Hill and The Washington Examiner; foreign publications such as The Jerusalem Post and The Toronto Sun; and specialist publications such as Defense News and  Nordic Monitor.

Webinars – Recent topics in our thrice-weekly series have focused on Turkey’s malign influence network in the U.S., the Taliban victory, and Saudi Arabia’s next generation leadership. In March, our webinar on Biden administration foreign policy featuring myself with Elliott Abrams, a top foreign policy official in several administrations, was featured on C-SPAN. Former Vice President Mike Pence appeared in conversation with me in September. To sign up for notices of future events, click here. For past ones, please go to YouTube.

MEF webinars have been broadcast by C-SPAN and featured (from left): MEF founder and president Daniel Pipes, former Vice President Mike Pence, and former Deputy National Security Advisor Elliott Abrams.

Examples of our Original Reporting and Analyses
  • Islamist Watch director Sam Westrop; writer Jordan Cope; and fellow Abdullah Bozkurt – Uncovered the malign Qatari regime’s support of jihadist groups through its ostensibly benign Eid Charity, including $90 million worth of grants to the Palestinian territories, and $23.4 million to an Al-Qaeda-connected group in Turkey.

  • Sam Westrop and writer Martha Lee – Exposed Masood Khan, Pakistan’s new ambassador to the U.S., as a dangerous radical working to support Islamists in the West; and uncovered a Pakistani influence operation – which utilizes lobbyists, congressmen, terror supporters, and well-organized grassroots networks of American Pakistani Muslims – to advance Islamist interests in the U.S. while attacking India, using Kashmir as a pretext.

  • MEF director Gregg Roman – Prescribed a path to Palestinian defeat by understanding the symbolism that prisoners hold for the Palestinians, and humbling them with much stricter conditions and no more benefits. “Once they are captured and convicted of terrorist activities, they should feel the cold reality of personal failure and defeat.”

  • Islamist Watch deputy director Benjamin Baird and Martha Lee – Uncovered the Council on American-Islamic Relation’s (CAIR) lesson plan for teachers ahead of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, which whitewashes the Islamist role in the attacks.

  • Martha Lee – Exposed a new Washington, D.C. think tank, Democracy for the Arab World Now (NOW), as a wolf in sheep’s clothing, defending extremists and justifying religious totalitarianism under the cover of promoting human rights and democratic ideals, and utilizing officials with connections to Al Qaeda and Hamas networks.

  • Writer Rebecca Molloy – Uncovered evidence that eBay’s founder Pierre Omidyar funds, through the Roshan Institute (run by his Iranian-born mother), politicized, anti-American, and anti-Israel scholars at universities across the globe, often to the benefit of the Tehran regime.

  • And then I – Explained, through 21 historical examples, why wars are endemic in the Middle East: military loss usually does not damage defeated Arab rulers; to the contrary, it usually benefits them, even in the face of the population’s suffering. “With stakes so low, give war a chance and hope for the best.”
_ _ _ _ _

The past two years have brought many new and pressing issues to the world’s attention. But Middle East issues persist, as they always do, and our work remains vital.

While Israel’s new relations with moderate Sunni states give hope, the Jewish state still has not achieved definitive victory over the Palestinians and regional extremism persists. In the West, radical Islam fueled by mass migration, and often in partnership with the far-left, threatens democratic ideals.

On behalf of our Board of Governors, staff and writing fellows, I deeply appreciate your consideration of this request for support.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Pipes
President
