After a painful start to the season by its lofty standards, the Spanish Grand Prix was a high point for Mercedes in F1 2022. I thought George Russell drove quite brilliantly to fend of Max Verstappen for so many laps, while Lewis Hamilton – initially despondent after his clash with Kevin Magnussen and puncture – also produced a sparkling comeback drive. But the chances of a repeat performance on the streets of Monaco have been downplayed by team boss Toto Wolff, while data suggests that Alfa Romeo – led by Mercedes refugee Valtteri Bottas – could be best of the rest behind Ferrari and Red Bull this weekend.
