Nyck de Vries won the Formula E World Championship in Berlin on Sunday for Mercedes, after a tense and thrilling season finale.

De Vries is also Merc’s test and reserve driver in Formula 1, so the team knows all about him. He won the FIA F2 title in 2019 but missed the boat when it came to an F1 chance – as fellow McLaren junior Lando Norris had already clambered aboard.

At 26, de Vries is running out of years to get his F1 opportunity – but if George Russell is to replace Valtteri Bottas at Mercedes next year, might that open up a chance with Williams?
