Merciless heat, wildfires leave residents looking for some relief

BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer

Louisiana's summer swelter continues: 25 residents have died from the heat since May, according to state officials, and daily records for maximum temperature have been eclipsed in several locations.

Baton Rouge topped out Wednesday at 105, against the historic maximum of 110 on Aug. 19, 1909. The city has recorded 26 days this year of temperatures of 100 or higher; its record is 28 days.

At a special meeting Thursday, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board will consider new start and end time for schools for the rest of 2023-24 school year.
