I'm travelling to Istanbul next week for the first time in my life, so I've been waiting to make an Istanbullish joke somewhere. Thanks, Metair, for giving me that opportunity with the decision to exit Turkey by selling the battery business in what looks like a strong deal. The market certainly liked it.
The market also enjoyed the numbers from OUTsurance, and why wouldn't they? The group is doing extremely well at the moment. In other earnings news, Capital Appreciation is still a tale of two divisions and Hyprop has at least returned to paying dividends, albeit lower than before. Texton and York Timbers also released numbers.
In other corporate news, Sanlam has completed the acquisition of Assupol and Europa Metals has so much going on that the group will be transformed if all goes ahead.

While scrolling through X this morning, I noticed a rather spectacular thread written by the founder of Autopilot, who also happens to be the guy running the @pelositracker account on X that follows trades made by Nancy Pelosi. In the US, there's a lot of valid noise around trades made by politicians and how they seem to have an uncanny ability to time the market. It helps to have the inside scoop on regulatory matters, doesn't it?
So, Chris Josephs and his team spent a fortune sponsoring a huge UFC event with the slogan "Invest like a politician" - quite brilliant, really, aided by the hiring of a Nancy Pelosi impersonator who spent the night at the casino gambling with guests!
Of course, there's a strong underlying message here. It's just wrapped up in great creativity. Here's the full thread with all the details.
Our latest research in Magic Markets Premium is on Dollar Tree. The company is in trouble, with my partner in Magic Markets, Mohammed Nalla, describing it to me as "one of the ugliest charts you'll see" - and the reasons why are a great learning opportunity for our subscribers this week. |

IG Morning Call: daily macroeconomic update |
---|
|
---|
Global equity markets are tracking sideways to slightly lower ahead of key central bank activity starting today. The Bank of England, Federal Reserve, South African Reserve Bank and Bank of Japan all conclude monetary policy meetings this week, and will announce changes (if any) to key lending rates.
The Federal Reserve is first up this afternoon and they are expected to lower the Federal Funds rate by 50 basis points.
The JSE All-Share index is in turn expected to open marginally lower in line with its international peers.
The dollar is trading slightly firmer along with US Treasury Yields, although remains close to its lowest levels in roughly 10 days.
Gold has started a marginal retracement from all-time highs and overbought territory in an inverse correlation to movements on the dollar.
Oil prices are relatively unchanged overnight.
Adding to the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) news scheduled for today, local CPI inflation data will be closely monitored by traders ahead of the SARB's rate decision tomorrow.
Key Indicators: USD/ZAR R17.59/$ | US 10yr 3.64% | Gold $2,569/oz | Platinum $980/oz | Brent Crude $72.72
The macroeconomic update is based on IG's morning call update |
