LA DRIVE-BY, a road movie, innovative and surprising, designed by the Dutch photo book designer Sybren Kuiper (SYB) with fold-out photographs up to eight times their original page size, is an experience, narrated not linear but like the random cruising of the photographer through the city.
The grainy, radical, black-and-white photographs - shot out of the moving car in the '90s - pay homage to L.A.'s multi-layered soul, diving into the impoverished worker-industrial-gang-dominated areas south of the City of Angels. | | | | | |  | | | | LA 050 © Michael Lange, courtesy Robert Morat Galerie, Berlin | | | | | | | "I looked for the desert." Michael Lange let himself drift away from the Freeways, the main roads, the safe zones; he deliberately got lost in the black holes of the car city. Sometime, somewhere he hit the release button. When asked he tells of his fear, the heat and the emptiness of these streets, the panic that befell him when he had to stop too long at a traffic light, the darkness behind the tinted windows of a car standing in front of a fire wall, the streets he backed out of because he had read something in the faces that can't be put into words - of the suddenness, the inevitability with which an image, an object, a view jumped at him so that he couldn't help but take a picture, fast, spontaneous, out of the moving car.
