Michigan abortions neared 30-year high in 2023 |
Last year, Michigan surpassed 31,000 abortions for the first time since 1995. The state reported 31,241 induced abortions in 2023, according to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) data published this summer. That amounted to 16.5 abortions per 1,000 Michigan women age 15-44 -- the highest rate since 1989. Michiganders recycle more paper and plastic, toss more deposits: An analysis of Michigan’s waste stream shows the state annually sends to landfills at least $500 million in wasted food and recyclable materials, including $130,000 in cans and bottles with a 10-cent returnable deposit. Locally: A seasonal farmworker has filed a federal lawsuit against Republican state Rep. Bryan Posthumus, a fifth-generation farmer and co-founder of West Michigan Hopyards. |

Snowfall reports from across Michigan |
The National Weather Service has released a batch of snowfall reports from observers and weather stations across the state, and it shows a pretty decent cross-section in areas where the heaviest snow has been falling since late Thursday. Most of the big snow totals are clustered around the Gaylord area, where they broke the record for its biggest snow day. No serious injuries reported: Michigan State Police reported Saturday morning there were about 150 car crashes across the metro Detroit region after heavy snow hit this Thanksgiving weekend. All the “preventable crashes” occurred within 24 hours, police said in a post on X. Traveling?: Road work continues this week with Thanksgiving in the rearview mirror. More than 45 lane, ramp, and road closures along the state’s primary roadways are on the calendar through Saturday, Dec. 7, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. |

See the average SAT score for each Michigan school district |
Fewer Michigan high school students are meeting certain college readiness standards, according to test results tracked by the state. Just over 25% of the 98,995 students tested during the 2023-24 school year met or exceeded readiness standards with their SAT score. For just the reading and writing test, 51.3% of those assessed met readiness standards, while 26.3% met readiness for the math assessment. Those percentages are down from pre-COVID-19 pandemic scores in 2018-19 when 33.9% of students’ SAT score met standards, and 55.3% of students met reading and writing standards and 36.6% of students performed sufficiently in math. Michigan stuns No. 2 Ohio State for fourth straight win in rivalry |
In a stunner on Saturday, a Michigan football team that struggled all season long against some of the Big Ten’s best came through against its arch rival. A 21-yard field goal by Dominic Zvada with 45 seconds left proved to be the difference in a 13-10 win over the Buckeyes, keeping them from the Big Ten title game and a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff. As Michigan celebrated, some Wolverine players made their way to midfield in an attempt to plant a Block M flag. Predictably, chaos ensued and a fight broke out. Amid the chaos, players from both teams were hit with pepper spray by police. MLive was on the sideline for the end of the game and beginning of the fight, here's what our reporters witnessed. The Big Ten moved to fine both schools $100,000 each. For Michigan State: Needing a win in the regular-season finale to become bowl eligible, the Spartans (5-7, 3-6 Big Ten) were trampled 41-14 at home by Rutgers (7-5, 4-5) on a cold, snowy Saturday evening. |

Hurricane Helene refugee dogs and cats find new homes across Michigan |
On an afternoon in mid-October, 15 dogs and 19 cats landed at Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport. The animals all came from Hurricane Helene-ravaged areas in Tennessee and North Carolina. They were greeted with open arms by volunteers and staff from SPCA of Southwest Michigan. Fast forward 1 1/2 months and all but one of the animals — “a spicy, gray-and-white, 1-year-old cat named Caesar” — have been adopted, said SPCA Executive Director Katie Timber.
