In today's newsletter, updated winter temp forecast, Trump plans 2 visits to Michigan this week and a massive ‘skyline defining’ project in Grand Rapids. |
First away game, first away victory 👏 |
The Detroit Lions held on for a 20-13 win on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. They’ve now gone nearly two calendar years without a losing streak, a franchise record. Once again, it was the defense that helped lead the way for Detroit. In college football, the Wolverines opened Big Ten play with a 27-24 victory over the 11th-ranked Trojans. The Spartans lost 23-19 on Saturday night in their final non-conference game. For baseball, Kerry Carpenter hit two home runs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon at Camden Yards. That means, at least for now, the Royals and Tigers hold the second and third AL wild card spots. |

Michigan apple orchard ranked one of the top 10 in the entire nation |
Tis the season for U-pick apples. And one Michigan apple orchard has received some pretty big accolades. USA Today’s 10Best list of the top 10 apple orchards in the country has ranked Knaebe’s Apple Farm at No. 5. Spooky fun: One of Michigan’s most popular outdoor Halloween attractions, Glenlore Trails: “Enchanted” nighttime forest walkthrough, opened over the weekend. Located at 860 Newton Road in Commerce Township at Multi Lakes, this family-friendly trail is now in its fifth year. Sneak peek: “Twice the Cheer” is the motto for the return of Grand Rapid's highly anticipated 28-day Chistkindl Markt this year, including more themed glassware to collect and live entertainment. |

As geese thrive in Michigan parks and golf courses, state could allow lethal roundup |
Where someone might see a pristine golf course or grassy lakeside park, a Canada goose sees a perfect home base. The waterfowl, generations ago on the brink of extinction, are now thriving in Michigan’s cities and suburbs. For some, too much so, leading to increasing complaints of poop and feather-covered lawns or docks, swimming beaches shuttered as E. coli levels spike and the occasional aggressive goose, state wildlife officials say. Beginning in 2025, some lake associations, cities and homeowners groups might be able to recruit federal teams to round up and kill geese. Looking to make some change: After a toddler with special needs went missing and was found dead last year, a lawmaker wants to expand who qualifies for the state’s Amber Alert system. More coming from Lansing: Since 2004 the families of Michigan first responders who died or were permanently disabled while on duty have received a one-time payment of $25,000. Now there’s a proposal with widespread support to double the benefit amount. |

Updated winter temp forecast just got warmer for Michigan, here’s why |
Long-range weather forecasts are always updated gradually as we get closer to the time period of the forecast. The winter forecast has just been updated by NOAA’s long-range forecasting experts. The tweak to the December to February temperature forecast for Michigan is to a slightly warmer scenario than the winter forecast issued one month ago. Still looks sloppy, wet and white: This newest precipitation forecast tells the story of above normal precipitation amounts for the period of December to February. Note this is a precipitation forecast, which officially means the liquid that falls through the period. This would be rain, melted freezing rain and the water amount in the snowfall. Really bright: You may feel like you’ve been squinting a lot this month, and you’re right. It has been a very sunny September. In fact it looks like the official data from the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids has us pacing toward the sunniest September on record. |

Trump plans 2 visits to Michigan this week |
Former President Donald Trump announced he will make two visits to Michigan this week. Trump will first deliver remarks on Friday, Sept. 27 at FALK Production in Walker. Friday evening, Trump will travel to Macomb Community College, where he’ll participate in a town hall-style event. His running mate J.D. Vance will deliver remarks about Michigan’s auto industry in Traverse City on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Vice President Kamala Harris’ Fighting for Reproductive Freedom Bus Tour is making its way to Ann Arbor, with special guest actor Adam Scott, known for playing Ben Wyatt in the TV sitcom, “Parks and Recreation.” Opinion: Preparing for the elimination of tipped wages, some Ann Arbor restaurant owners are questioning the future as they are already dealing with slim profit margins and rising food costs due to inflation. |

DeVos, Van Andel families plan massive ‘skyline defining’ project in Grand Rapids |
A roughly seven-acre, riverfront parking lot in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids could be transformed into a vibrant, mixed-use development with three high-rise towers containing up to 671 high-end apartments and condos, a hotel, office tower and retail. With an estimated $738 million price tag, it ranks as one of the biggest projects in the city’s history. The vision is being proposed by Fulmar Property Holdings, a company comprised of members of the DeVos and Van Andel families. The families own the 500-space parking lot at the corner of Fulton Street and Market Avenue, just north of Acrisure Amphitheater, where the project would be built. Here are 5 things to know about the project. In transportation: Road construction and special events will require more than 75 additional closures this week throughout Michigan. |
