Mackinac Island has been racking up the accolades this year and the popular Up North spot has one more to add to the list. National travel publication, Condé Nast, just revealed the Top 5 Resorts in the Midwest: Readers’ Choice Awards 2024. The Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island took the No. 1 spot. The Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth in Metro Detroit came in at No. 5. The island was also recently named one of the top places to visit during fall. USA Today rated Mackinac Island No. 2 on its Best Fall Travel Destinations list. |

| Michigan braces as port strike could throw ‘monkey wrench’ in supply chain |
Thousands of dock workers walked off the job this week, letting shipping containers sit and bringing vital eastern United States ports to a standstill. The coastwide strike stretching from Houston to Boston could rattle the U.S. supply chain and have a ripple effect on Michigan’s $65 billion export economy. Everything from auto parts to soybeans, bananas and Christmas toys could be impacted. What's happening: About 45,000 International Longshoremen’s Association members launched the first major port strike in nearly 50 years when their contract with the United States Maritime Alliance expired. Picket lines formed Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 36 ports that handle about half the country’s ocean cargo as the union demanded pay increases and job protections against automation. Depending how long it lasts, the strike could cost billions of dollars. Timeline revealed: State leaders have released the official schedule of significant pay increases starting next year for minimum wage workers and tipped employees. |

Fall color update: Part of Upper Peninsula just starting to dazzle |
| Changing colors: The warm weather has slowed the development of fall colors, leaving most of Lower Michigan is still mostly green. There are a few small pockets of scattered fall color forming, but still not worth chasing down this week. The inland areas of the western U.P. and the central U.P. have about 25 percent color change, with the western U.P. possibly peaking in a week. You should target Oct. 8-12 for a trip to that area. Be on the outlook: A strong solar flare is likely going to blow enough solar energy into our atmosphere to produce widespread northern lights in the next few days. The NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch for Oct. 3 to Oct. 5. Also in the skies: We have one comet we are watching now, and a new comet that has just been discovered is about to come into view. This comet, known as Comet C/2024 S1, could become bright enough to see during the day. It could be the brightest one in 60 years. |

Vance tells West Michigan he or Trump will be here ‘probably every week’ until election |
Coming back: Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance said West Michiganders will continue to see him, and former President Donald Trump, often before the November election. The Ohio senator spoke during a rally on Wednesday, Oct. 2, that drew more than 500 people to the Berlin Raceway and Entertainment Complex in Marne, about nine miles northwest of Grand Rapids. Campaign trail: Former President Donald Trump will return to Detroit this month. He will address members of The Detroit Economic Club on Thursday, Oct. 10, at MotorCity Casino Hotel, campaign officials said. The appearance — scheduled 26 days before the November general election — would mark the Republican’s third trip to Detroit this year and his second campaign stop in Michigan this month. In local news: Kalamazoo County commissioners have voted to increase their salaries by 74% after originally considering a proposal that would have doubled their pay. |

Tigers sweep Astros with late-inning magic, advance to ALDS in Cleveland |
Next round: Pinch-hitter Andy Ibanez hit a bases-loaded, two-out, two-strike double in the eighth inning to score three runs and lead the Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Wednesday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.The Tigers swept the best-of-three series and will advance to play the Guardians in the best-of-five American League Division Series beginning Saturday afternoon in Cleveland. Giving back: Kirk Gibson, a World Series hero who is battling Parkinson’s, will soon live out another dream by opening Michigan’s first Parkinson’s wellness center. The Center, which will be located in in Farmington Hills, will offer people a wide range of activity-based programs, completely free of charge. Gibson, who played for the Tigers, Dodgers, Royals and Pirates from 1979 to 1995, was diagnosed with the disease in 2015. A little different: Michigan State head football coach Tom Izzo, now entering his 30th year leading the Spartans, will be back in his tent on Friday night for the campout that comes with a twist. MSU's men’s and women’s basketball teams will host their midnight madness event at the Breslin Center with an earlier start that will transition to the campout where students spend the night outside for membership in the Izzone. |

Check it out: In celebration of the state’s most colorful season, Visit Muskegon laid out a trail guide from the Muskegon South Pierhead Light to the White River Light Station in Whitehall. The self-guided journey winds along Lake Michigan and the West Michigan Pike Byway, with giveaways along the way. Family friendly: Mark your calendars for the annual Fall Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the historic Applewood estate near the Flint Cultural Center. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of fall-themed attractions, including, fresh cider and apples, harvest displays, hands-on activities, live music, and historic house tours. Growing tall: A giant sequoia forest could soon be growing in a Detroit neighborhood. Arboretum Detroit, which owns and manages a system of parks in the Poletown East neighborhood, has plans to plant 200 giant sequoia trees on vacant land. |
