Let's get outside this weekend |
It's no secret that Michigan is home to endless outdoor adventures for you to enjoy. But if you have an affinity to taking in the great outdoors by trail, check out these two options this weekend. After 10 years of progress, a new trailhead is coming to Wahlfield Park in Comstock Park. A grand opening celebrating the expansion of the mountain bike trail will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12. The Wahlfield trail now loops nearly eight miles, passing through apple trees, forests and along Mill Creek. For another picturesque adventure, trek over to Deadman’s Hill in Alba. This Up North spot that links to several trails is also a perfect day trip if you're visiting the Gaylord or Boyne City area. |

Michigan Democrats propose steep fines, longer prison time for child labor offenses |
Minors would be forbidden from working overnight and in hazardous jobs under new state legislation that would also significantly increase penalties for businesses violating Michigan’s child labor laws. The package of bills would also create a state registry of minors in the workforce, allowing the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity to track businesses that hire them and better educate employers on the state’s child labor laws, according to testimony Tuesday, Oct. 8. Polls say: Former President Donald Trump’s supporters in Michigan are less confident in the fairness and accuracy of the upcoming election than his rival’s supporters, according to new polling. Saginaw officials released video footage showing Saginaw City Council member Monique Lamar-Silvia allegedly falsify signatures on the nominating petition forms of another individual seeking a seat on the council. The footage, which MLive/The Saginaw News obtained via the Freedom of Information Act, was released less than one week after Michigan Secretary of State officials confirmed Lamar-Silvia was under investigation. |

Don’t put your summer clothes away: Strong warming possible, even 80 degrees |
Warming back up: An almost summery pattern may come back into Michigan for at least a few days. We will still have a few chilly days early next week and then the clearly much warmer pattern by the end of next week. After that, temperatures will warm to more than 70 degrees across most of Lower Michigan by late next week or next weekend. Geomagnetic storm: A severe solar storm is headed to Earth that could stress power grids even more as the U.S. deals with major back-to-back hurricanes, space weather forecasters said Wednesday. Weekend forecast: The weather will change quite a bit as we head through the weekend. For most of Michigan the weather story is a dry Saturday and a showery Sunday. Here's a look at the rain and temperature outlook. |

Upper Peninsula utility gets go-ahead for $6.6M electric rate hike |
Increasing: A utility serving more than 42,000 customers in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has the authority to raise electric rates by $6.6 million in the first increase approved by regulators since its formation in 2016. During a meeting held Thursday, Oct. 10 in Escanaba, the Michigan Public Service Commission voted to OK a settlement agreement resolving Upper Michigan Energy Resources Corp.’s request to raise customer rates by nearly $11.2 million. Regulators with the panel overseeing major state utilities instead approved rate hikes at a level 40% lower than the utility wanted, which they say will help fund infrastructure investments in new power generation and help maintain safety and reliability. Wheels on the bus: Students at Jackson Public Schools can expect a cleaner, quieter ride to school after the district converted nearly half its fleet to electric vehicles. The switch could save the district up to $100,000 in expenses like fuel and maintenance, about 32,400 gallons of diesel while avoiding roughly 124 metric tons of carbon dioxide released per year. |

Michigan court says marijuana dealers face much harsher sentences than illegal growers |
Doing time: People committing similar large-scale marijuana crimes face very different penalties in Michigan. Dealers are eligible to serve up to 15 years in prison, while illegal growers of any size may only be charged with a misdemeanor, the state Court of Appeals clarified this week. A Midland man has been charged with being among the insurgents who stormed the U.S. Capitol and assaulted police in their efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Brien A. Burton, 44, is charged with seven federal offenses. Looking for answers: Silent Observing is now offering a $10,000 reward for information that helps solve a Grand Rapids teen’s homicide. Amillier Penn, 15, was shot and killed June 2, 2024, in the 400 block of Umatilla Street SE. He was playing football with friends. Police earlier said Amillier was unarmed when he was chased down and shot at least eight times. |
