In today's newsletter, a heat wave is coming to Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel sues President Trump over "energy emergency" and body found in Lake Michigan likely has been missing for long time.

Michigan is heating up

Several cities across Michigan are embracing warmer weather as temperatures start to climb well into the 70s, signaling that summer is on the way.

For parents looking to keep their kids cool this season, local pools can provide a fun way to beat the heat. YMCAs across Washtenaw County are bringing back free Safety Around Water programs next month. The program will teach beach, pool, water park and boating safety as well as drowning prevention strategies and swim stroke development.

Grand Rapids is getting ready for pool season by launching a new Outdoor Pool Season Pass program. Residents 17-years-old and under can receive free pool access under the initiative if they sign up by June 6.

Falling behind: Michigan children may be significantly lagging behind in fourth-grade reading, eight-grade math and overall in certain K-12 student groups compared to the rest of the country, according to a new study examining the sluggish effects of post-pandemic learning loss. According to the NAEP, Michigan ranked 44th in the nation for fourth-grade reading and 31st for eighth-grade math in 2024.

A West Michigan library has abruptly closed after most of its staff resigned last week. The Patmos Library in Jamestown Township will be temporarily closed for a “short period of time” while the library board works to rebuild staffing, according to a message on the library website‘s home page.

Record heat? Temp flip has U.P. sweltering near 90 degrees

Heating up: As the week progresses we will get a stronger chance at a different type of record warm mornings. Thursday and Friday morning may only cool to around 60 or even warmer. Friday morning should have a few new record warm low temperatures. Clouds will increase some and a few thundershowers will be around for Tuesday and Wednesday. While it will still be warm, the clouds will take away the chance for 80 degrees either of those days. We will be back into the 80s Thursday which leads us to the warmest morning on Friday.

Getting stormy: Areas of thundershowers will start Tuesday and continue into Thursday. Eventually a strong cold front could drive a line of severe thunderstorms through Michigan late Thursday or early Friday. The Storm Prediction Center already has part of Michigan painted in their day-4 severe weather outlook.

In the sky: This week’s Flower Moon will be the last of triple consecutive micromoons, according to EarthSky.

Michigan AG sues Trump over ‘energy emergency’ used to fast-track oil and gas projects

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined forces with counterparts in 14 other states to challenge President Donald Trump’s declaration of a “national energy emergency,” employed as a basis to fast-track fossil fuel projects. The proposed Line 5 oil pipeline tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac in Michigan is among scores of energy projects across the country undergoing environmental permitting on a truncated timeline because of a Trump executive order issued on day one of his second term.

Illinois officials are set to resume efforts to prevent invasive carp from entering Lake Michigan and the rest of the Great Lakes. The move comes after the Trump administration said on Friday, May 9 that it won’t attempt to claw back federal funding for a long-planned $1.2 billion infrastructure project bringing carp barriers to the Des Plaines River.

Having their day in court: A Michigan judge has issued a ruling allowing a lawsuit filed against the state by victims of mid-Michigan flooding in 2020 to proceed toward trial.

Who’s behind 21 Michigan billboards criticizing Trump’s national parks cuts?

National Parks Billboards: A left-leaning advocacy group has placed 21 billboards across Michigan criticizing Trump administration cuts to the National Park Service. The postcard-style signs warn of "reduced staff" at parks and are part of a larger campaign spanning 40 cities nationwide. Danielle James reports the group More Perfect Union is behind the multi-million dollar campaign, which aims to inform visitors about how federal cuts "will degrade the experience" at national parks this year.

Prescription drug costs: President Trump issued an executive order Monday demanding drugmakers lower prescription prices within 30 days or face government intervention. Matt Durr reports the order directs Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to match prices paid in other developed nations. While Trump claims millions will save money, experts note the impact may be limited primarily to Medicare and Medicaid recipients, with uncertain benefits for those with private insurance.

Health care cuts: House Republicans have proposed $880 billion in Medicaid cuts that could cause 8.6 million Americans to lose health coverage over the next decade. The cuts would help fund $4.5 trillion in tax breaks, primarily extending Trump's 2017 tax cuts set to expire next year. Matt Durr reports that several Republicans, including Sen. Josh Hawley, have voiced opposition, warning the cuts would harm their constituents and potentially close hospitals.

Body found in Lake Michigan likely has been missing for long time, identity unknown

Identity unknown: Officials are working to identify a body found in Lake Michigan. Conservation officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources in Beverly Shores are investigating after a fisherman discovered the body approximately two miles offshore from Central Beach just before 8 a.m. on May 10, Brandon Champion reports. Due to the condition of the body, the person appears to have been missing for an extended period, according to the DNR.

Missing teen: Authorities are asking for help locating a 15-year-old last seen leaving a Battle Creek high school on Thursday, May 7. Glenn Lee Brown, 15, was last seen walking into a wooded area behind Pennfield High School, according to Calhoun County sheriff’s deputies. As of Monday, May 12, Glenn has not made contact with family or friends and does not have a cellphone in his possession, deputies said.

Be aware: Scammers are increasingly impersonating celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Garth Brooks, Kid Rock, and non-entertainers like active and former 4-star military generals, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said.
