Your next best slice of pizza could be in southeast Michigan |
From BonBonBon being named the one of the best chocolate shops in the country to Chateau Chantal beating out Napa Valley for the top wine country stay, Michigan's food and beverage scene has been catching plenty of national attention. The Mitten has one more accolade to add to its resume: great pizza. Loui's Pizza in Hazel Park is No. 1 on Yelp’s 2024 Top 100 Pizza Spots in the Midwest list for its Detroit-style pies. Loui’s beat out popular pizzerias in places like Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Cleveland, for a top spot on the Yelp list. The list also has 15 other Michigan pizzerias on it. Speaking of beverages, Kalamazoo's Green Top Tavern is celebrating 100 years of its speakeasy heritage with a Roaring 20s party today, August 22. |

Michigan reports 4-year high for bicyclists, pedestrians struck by vehicles |
On the road: Two dozen bicyclists and 183 pedestrians died last year after being struck by vehicles in Michigan. Both means of transportation have grown increasingly more dangerous for Michiganders in recent years, with crashes returning to pre-pandemic levels after three consecutive increases. The details: In 2023, Michigan reported 2,114 vehicle crashes involving pedestrians, and 1,480 involving bicyclists, according to state police data released this summer. That’s 11% more pedestrian-involved crashes and 10% more bicyclist-involved crashes than in 2022. Wheels on the bus: Grand Rapids Community College students and staff can get free rides on The Rapid bus line this school year as part of a new pilot program aimed at reducing transportation costs. |

4 day heat wave heading toward Michigan |
Heating back up: It’s going to get hotter than it’s been since mid-June. Lower Michigan will have several days in a row at 90 degrees or hotter. Monday looks like the hottest day with expected temperatures ranging from 91 to 94 degrees. The heat and humidity continues into Tuesday. A possible cold front could move through the state Wednesday or Thursday, making Friday much cooler. The more you know: It’s hard for us to see what’s going on all around us while on the ground staring up at the sky. A satellite image of the Great Lakes gives us a perfect look at why it’s often cooler near the lake on a hot summer day. Also in weather: The powerful geomagnetic storm back in May that caused the Northern Lights to be seen across most of the country will have long-lasting effects on Earth, new data shows. |

Judicial assistant pleads guilty to embezzling more than $60K from Michigan judge |
A Detroit man who served as a judicial assistant pleaded guilty this week to charges related to the embezzlement of more than $60,000 from the Third Circuit Court in Wayne County judge he worked for. Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office announced the plea agreement Tuesday between her office and 43-year-old Steven Allen. Also in court: A federal jury has convicted seven anti-abortion activists of attempting to blockade two Michigan reproductive health clinics. Further testing is needed on human remains found during a search of property that belongs to a man whose wife disappeared years ago and is presumed dead. Michigan State Police believe the remains are of Dee Warner, who has been missing since 2021. |

We measured the decibels at a Michigan NASCAR race. It’s like a Lions playoff game. |
Well, that's loud: We measured the decibels at this weekend’s races at Michigan International Speedway, taking 20 recordings in various areas. The highest level recorded? Sound levels hit 127.9 decibels on a restart on Sunday during the NASCAR Cup Series race. This was recorded behind the yellow line a couple feet from the catchfence (as close as they let fans get). Going abroad: Michigan State won its first two games to start a 10-day trip to Spain before dropping the finale to finish 2-1 in exhibition competition. The Spartans lost 115-110 against KK FMP Belgrade on Tuesday at Palau Blaugrana in Barcelona. High school sports: From dynamic quarterbacks to elusive rushers to game-breaking receivers, there should be no shortage of eye-popping performances this season in high school football. MLive has created a list of the state’s top 25 Michigan high school football players to watch on offense this season. |

Here’s how to be a Double Crosser on the Mackinac Bridge this Labor Day |
Annual tradition: The 66th Mackinac Bridge Walk is scheduled on Monday, Sept. 2. Tens of thousands of pedestrians are expected to walk on the Michigan landmark and some will be double crossers. For those looking to cross the bridge completely, turn around and return to their starting point, it's recommended that they start at 7 a.m. to complete their trek. Start exploring: Jackson County is home to several museums where people can learn about art, military history or rural life in the 1800s. From art exhibits to simple farmhouse displays, here are five great museums in Jackson County worth visiting. Closed for now: One of the Upper Peninsula’s more remote campgrounds is closing for the fall as it undergoes repairs. The Milakokia Lake State Forest Campground will close after Labor Day to start on improvements for better traffic flow, boating access and replacing vault toilets. |
