If one of your 2024 bucket list items includes climbing the historic Big Sable Light in Hamlin Township, your time to complete the activity is running out. The lighthouse will close for the season after Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2, as part of the construction at Ludington State Park. The final weekend includes a bus day that allows visitors to skip the hike, which is a four-mile roundtrip. This weekend's travel plans just became slightly easier with more than half of the state's road construction projects paused until after the holiday. |

Get prepared: Michigan's next round of strong storms is already on the way. Friday will have a moderately strong cold front moving through the southeast half of Lower Michigan during the a warm afternoon and evening. For Lower Michigan, spotty 60-mph gusts are possible, putting this as a low-end severe weather situation. What a beauty: After a severe storm rolled through parts of Michigan early Tuesday night, a downtown Ann Arbor resident caught a moment of awe on camera: a full,180-degree rainbow. Holiday weekend: The Labor Day Weekend weather will be nice with a mix of summer and fall. Saturday should be dry everywhere and in the high-70s to low-80s. Sunday will have a few showers over eastern Michigan. Temperatures will steadily drop by five degrees from Friday until Monday. |

The details: U.S. Sen. JD Vance, the running mate of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, visited Michigan on Tuesday to hammer topics like the economy, inflation and manufacturing just 70 days away from the November presidential election. Here are four things to know about his visit. On the campaign trail: With a push to engage young voters, Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign this week will receive support in Michigan from a Floridian known as the youngest member of Congress. U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost will meet with prospective voters in Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Flint today and Friday during campaign rallies. In the workforce: Michigan workers being paid the bare minimum weren’t supposed to start earning $12 an hour until 2030. Now, thanks to a Michigan Supreme Court ruling last month, minimum wage earners will be taking home about $12.50 an hour starting early next year. But the planned changes have stirred quite the debate among Michiganders. |

‘We’re just getting bulldozed’: Michigan power line projects spark pushback |
Some Michigan landowners are concerned that their property could be transformed in the coming years as a 95-mile set of high-voltage power lines are planted in the ground through central and southern Michigan. What's going on: For the first time in 50 years, new high-voltage lines are slated to cross from Michigan into Indiana, as part of a $10.3 billion set of projects across the Midwest. Now landowners — and dozens of others — are caught up in power grid transformation plans as it moves away from fossil fuels, sees new demand and is hardened against increasingly extreme weather fueled by climate change. Also in the environment: A Presque Isle County steel fabricator has won a contract to build a new fisheries research boat for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. |
