If you're in headed to the the Keweenaw Peninsula this week, be sure to pack your plaid. In honor of Plaidurday—the worldwide celebration of plaid that was founded in Marquette—the town is hosting its second Keweenaw Plaidurday on Friday, Oct. 4. Organizers are attempting to set a new record for the most people wearing plaid. Last year's event set a record with 1,745 people but that number has not been verified by Guinness World Records. Michigan’s tallest waterfall getting $600K park development |
New things to see: Standing at 110 feet tall, Michigan’s tallest waterfall is being developed into a scenic site with new amenities. Initial work is underway at the future Houghton Douglass Falls and Veterans Memorial Scenic Site near Houghton in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced. About $600,000 has been allocated to the project, which includes a new road and parking lot, and a veterans memorial. Increasing: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore experienced a rise in day visitors this year, compared to traditional vacationers, according to the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail newsletter. Preliminary figures for 2024 estimate around 1.6 million visitors will make their way to see the towering bluffs above Lake Michigan in 2024, bringing in nearly $200 million. In the wild: The Detroit Zoo is saying goodbye to a young member of its Pride. The first lion cub born at the Detroit Zoo since 1980, Binti will soon head to another zoo as part of the Species Survival Plan. With the departure of Binti, the Detroit Zoo will soon welcome a new male lion. |

It also boasts a large-scale sports performance center. Blueprint: The University of Michigan on Monday, Sept. 30, released its 25-year plan to transform its Ann Arbor campus through dozens of projects. More housing: Kalamazoo County is moving forward with plans to convert a hotel into a homeless shelter for families with children. With more than 60 units, the facility will help meet the critical shortage of emergency and residential shelter space for families with children, the county agenda states. |

Helmet ads have arrived for the Tigers, and all MLB playoff teams |
New look: The Detroit Tigers made some MLB history on Tuesday: They became the first team to wear advertisements on their batting helmets. The Tigers were the first team to bat in the first game of the 2024 MLB playoffs on Tuesday against the Astros. That gave fans a first look at baseball’s new branded batting helmets, which are debuting this postseason. The Tigers may lack postseason experience, but they didn’t look rattled by the playoff spotlight. After grinding through six weeks of playoff-style baseball to get here, they showed Tuesday that they belong. Tarik Skubal threw six shutout innings to lead the Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series at Minute Maid Park. The team announced Tuesday night that left-hander Tyler Holton would be the opener when they play the Houston Astros again today. On the field: The Lions were already down a couple starters on defense for Monday Night Football. Then 90 minutes before the game, they officially scratched Brian Branch due to an illness that popped up over the weekend. Head coach Dan Campbell isn’t sure what the illness is, but the team decided it wasn’t worth pressing the matter. |

Man electrocuted wife to ‘inflict as much pain as possible,’ prosecutor tells jury |
In court: On the outside, Saul Lucio-Ipina and his wife appeared to be a young and happy married couple. But what was allegedly happening inside the couple’s duplex told a different story, a Kent County assistant prosecutor says. The husband would accuse his wife of cheating. When she didn’t give him the answer he wanted, the arguments escalated into abuse. That alleged abuse would transform into torture. Lucio-Ipina allegedly bound his wife with wire one night in their basement, then used jumper cables to “zap” her with electricity over hours. The woman filed for divorce after her husband’s arrest, records filed in Kent County Courts show. The divorce has since been finalized. In court Tuesday, the woman identified Lucio-Ipina as her “ex-husband” while she testified. For the cause: Fundraisers are underway for the families of the UAW member killed and the two others critically injured when a suspected drunken driver crashed Saturday night into their picket line in Jackson. |
