Microsoft has announced it’s closing the Xbox 360 Store after 18 years of service.
Â
It’s not happening for a while yet, as the computer giant confirmed the store’s last day of business will take place next year on July 29.
Â
After that, players will be unable to buy games, downloadable content, movies, and TV shows from the Xbox 360 Store or use the Microsoft Movies & TV app.
Â
Digital Trends said the loss of any gaming storefront is a "dour move for the video game industry, as some games are exclusively available to them and will be lost forever when the store goes offline.”
Â
Also known as the Xbox Live Marketplace, the Xbox 360 Store is set to follow in the footsteps of other storefront shutdowns for older systems, Nintendo’s 3DS and Wii U eShops among them.
Â
Sony, on the other hand, had planned to shut down the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita storefronts in 2021 but reversed its decision following a customer backlash.
