The Beauty of Glass

ARE GLASS FLY RODS, which have recently reached a new peak in popularity after falling of out of favor for decades, here to stay?  That's the question that Maine guide, native fish advocate and former fly shop owner Bob Mallard asks this week. Says Mallard, "The action is perfect for tight quarters and short casts, and the low-modulus material lends itself to short rods and light lines.  Plus, glass is fun to fish."

MidCurrent editor Marshall Cutchin spent a couple of days last fall at the School of Trout on the scenic Henry's Fork in Idaho. Read his report in "Bugling Elk and Uncommon Wisdom."

INSIDE THE BOX:  Marshall talks with Russ Miller about Umpqua's fly box lineup for 2020.  On Thursday Scott and Kyle unbox the new Dropper Rig Box from Tandem Fly Co.

Tim Flagler demonstrates how to tie a fly he calls the Phat and Phunky Pheasant Tail in this week's featured tying video. "It’s basically three of my most favorite fly tying materials," says Flagler, "pheasant tail, wood duck and pine squirrel packed into one tight little package."

HOW TO CHOOSE FISHING SUNGLASSES

"Sunglass lenses work by blocking a percentage of light from passing through the lens. Usually, they block most or all ultraviolet light (a major eye-health concern), and some smaller percentage of visible light. The percentage of total visible light that passes through the lens to your eye is measured as “Visible Light Transmission,” or VLT. Darker glasses have a low VLT, and lightly-tinted glasses have a high VLT."  Read on...
