Flies: The Weird and the Wonderful

“THERE ARE two schools of fly anglers," notes Chester Allen in the opening to this week's column. "Those that believe in matching the hatch — and those that worship the weird and wonderful."  'Weird and wonderful,' in the case of Allen's experience with oddball flies, first appeared on the banks of the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park. He tells the story in “Chuggin’ The Moodah Poodah."

INSIDE THE BOX:  Umpqua's Russ Miller talks about the brand's 2020 tippet and leader materials. Tomorrow we unbox the Riversmith River Quiver, a new rooftop fly rod holder.

Ellis Hatch's Hatching Pupa is the subject of this week's featured tying video.  "It can be tied in a variety of color combinations but the red rib and natural stripped peacock quill body shown here is probably the most common," says tier and videographer Tim Flagler.

"Henry Croucher pulled his square-stern Grumman onto the shore of Little Moose Lake. The boat’s aluminum hull glittered under the afternoon sun.  It rained twice during the previous month, but the brief showers didn’t make up for the sustained drought that had gripped western Maine since early June."  Read on...
