Merwin on Father's Day

FLY FISHING is a sport where generations touch and overlap.  Memories, impressions, skills--all are passed along, reinterpreted, reimagined. On this Father's Day week in 2020 we share a piece that the John Merwin wrote for us in 2011, two years before he passed. If John's name isn't familiar, you can read something about his life and contributions to fly fishing here. But take a moment to read his brief thoughts on Father's Day, and remember that that son or daughter that you carry on your back will grow up quickly.  And that the dad whose shoulder you peered over or whose tying lessons saved you from homework passed along a bit of mystery for you to make your own.

MIDCURRENT AT IFTD: We talked with Costa's Peter Vandergrift at the IFTD show about the brand's Kick Plastic initiative, which has contributed to the removal of more than 180,600 pounds of trash from beaches and encouraged guides and anglers to avoid single-use plastics.

Barry Ord Clarke demonstrates how to tie an Ugly May in this week's featured tying video. "Don't be fooled by it's simplicity," says Clarke, "this is a deadly dry fly that will catch fish all over the globe!"

CHICO FERNANDEZ ON CUBA, JAZZ, FINE FOOD AND FISHING FROM CANOES

"{M}ost canoes today are not made for hunting and fishing. They are made to go fast, to travel long ways, to go down wide rivers and all that, but the original canoes, and the canoes I have, are the design of the 1880s, are flat-bottomed. They have a keel and are 36, 37 inches wide. Not super wide. If they are super-wide—39 or 40 inches—they’re a tub and you can’t cover water, so it is a compromise." Read more...

SMALL-FLY FREESTYLE NYMPHING

FREESTYLE NYMPHING isn’t as new as it sounds. It’s actually the way that many of us learned how to fish larger nymph imitations. We later applied that knowledge to fishing small flies with a tiny split shot attached to the leader before strike indicators were in widespread use.  Read on...
