"Tom and the Fat Boys"

GUY DE LA VALDENE might be one of the most underappreciated authors in fishing literature. This week we revisit an excerpt from his wonderful book On the Water: A Fishing Memoir, which traces a sublime path from Normandy to Montana to Key West. Enjoy "Tom and the Fat Boys."

INSIDE THE BOX: EPISODE #67 - This week Kyle unboxes the new Scott Centric, the company's latest freshwater fly rod. Scott doesn't release new models very often, and when they do, it's usually because new methods and technology warrant an upgrade.

Every year Tim Flagler visits the Douglas Outdoors annual salmon camp on the Salmon River in Pulaski, New York. This year his trip inspired him to author the Douglas Salmon Camp Swinger, a pattern that features high contrast and a swinger hook.

INTERVIEW: LEE SPENCER

“Every spring for 14 years, Lee Spencer and his companion, a herding dog named Sis, camped next to a pool on the North Umpqua’s Steamboat Creek. Their job for eight or nine months of the year was to protect several hundred wild summer steelhead. The fish had come up out of the Pacific Ocean to spawn in the pool. Over those seasons and four more, Spencer has observed and documented the behavior of these steelhead and the many other species, both animal and plant, that visit or inhabit the locale from spring through early winter.”  Read the answer...
