Daniel Webster's Trout

ONE MIGHT THINK that a fish with as storied a reputation as the sea-run brook trout, or "salter," would have the protections necessary to ensure its survival. But as Bob Mallard reports in this, the sixth in our Conservation series, failures have occurred across the spectrum, with inconsistent and lackadaisical state management as well as regulatory confusion dictating outcomes. Read his in-depth analysis in "Daniel Webster’s Trout: Preserving and Restoring the Nation’s Fabled Sea-Run Brook Trout."

Gary LaFontaine's Buzzball, a pattern meant to imitate a midge cluster floating on the water's surface, is the focus of this week's featured tying video. "I’ve always thought of the Buzzball as a winter pattern," notes tier and videographer Tim Flagler, "but I’ve heard of quite a few people using it with success year round."

NEW FEBRUARY GIVEAWAY! Tame that unruly fly line! Register to win one of three great prizes: a LineHut Stripping Bucket, LineTack Fly Line Spikes, or some cool FishSticks EVA foam fly holders from Carbon Marine.
