Women and the Art of Tying Flies "IN A SPORT DOMINATED by men, it is interesting to note that the first English-language essay published about fly fishing is reputed to have been written by a woman," writes Bob Romano in the introduction to his profile of four important female tiers. Of course women have played key roles throughout fly fishing history, often without the attention enjoyed by their male counterparts. One exception might be in Maine, where inventive tiers like Carrie Stevens and Glenna Allen, and more recently Selene Dumaine, played foundational roles in the state's fly fishing history. Read "Women and the Art of Tying Flies: a Maine Sporting Tradition." Tim Flagler demonstrates how to tie a Black and Tan Jig in this week's featured tying video. "Itās specifically designed for the low, clear water conditions weāve been getting here in the East, in the fall, for the last few years," notes Flagler. "Small and subtle is the name of the game, with contrast and markings being the most prominent attractive qualities." WE'RE HIRING AN EDITOR: MidCurrent has a job opening! I stood there, too, my fly rod in hand, watching, waiting for something to happenāand it did. I donāt know why it is that some of my best days on the river have begun with waking alone in the darkness, truly alone, with that deep, empty feelingāthat hollow aloneness that you cannot shake free of. It had been some time since my service in the Marines, but years later, the ghosts came to call, and I found myself afraid to sleep, knowing they come back.ā ā Read on... |
