Today we direct our gaze at hazy shadows in Ming Smith’s photography, quiet spaces in Suzanne McClelland’s paintings, and brutalist landmarks around New York City.

In the news, a woman is suing Minnesota’s Walker Art Center for gender discrimination after she was prohibited from breastfeeding her child at the museum. Meanwhile, Native artist Danielle SeeWalker is kicked out of a Colorado art residency for making a painting about Palestine.

Finally, our critic John Yau pays tribute to American artist Joe Zucker, who died last week at age 83. He writes of Zucker: “I will always love him for showing me that you could live in this world with humor and despair, and never lose sight of beauty and the joy of making something whose existence was not guaranteed.”
