Negotiations between the Minneapolis public school district and its teachers union on a new contract have failed, and a strike is set to begin Tuesday, a union leader confirmed.

Both the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers and Minneapolis Public Schools said negotiations lasted for hours on Saturday and Sunday, with proposals presented from both sides.

Meanwhile in St. Paul, bargaining continued today with similar demands expressed by educators. St. Paul’s administrators, like their counterparts in Minneapolis, say they can not afford to pay more.  The St. Paul district says if a settlement is reached after 9 p.m., school tomorrow still will be canceled.
