Renovations lift hopes at Minneapolis North High

Attending school in a construction zone and taking tests with the sound of power drills in the background has not been easy, but officials say it needed to happen. The old North building was dark and unwelcoming, with a history of lead in the water and occasional pest problems. A road divided the buildings.

Now, after years of pandemic challenges and life wedged in a construction zone, leaders believe the north Minneapolis school’s fortunes are turning for the better with the completion of $88 million in renovations.

Nearly a week after verbal stumbles in the only vice presidential debate, Democrat Tim Walz used his debut campaign appearance on a Sunday news show to try to fend off criticism of his stand on abortion rights and “own up” to past misstatements.

A former Minnesota police officer who was convicted of killing a Black motorist when she used her handgun instead of her taser during a traffic stop is out of prison and delivering presentations at law enforcement conferences, stirring up a heated debate over how officers punished for misconduct should atone for their misdeeds.

🚨 Federal HIDTA designation works to stop drug trafficking in Beltrami County area. The White House of National Drug Control Policy has designated Beltrami County in northwest Minnesota a high intensity drug trafficking area. It joins seven other counties in the state under the federal program. The designation brings additional attention and resources to the area for enforcement, treatment and diversion.

🚢 New EPA standards exempt most Great Lakes ships from installing new treatment systems. New standards adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency exempt the existing fleet of ships on the Great Lakes — including in the Duluth-Superior harbor — from installing new ballast water treatment systems to control the spread of invasive species.

💰 Paynesville dairy farm to pay $250,000 to settle wage-theft claim. Attorney General Keith Ellison filed the lawsuit in January against Evergreen Acres in Paynesville. It alleged Evergreen stole wages from low-income farm workers by shaving hours from their paychecks.
