Can Winona County turn around its lagging voter turnout? These people are working to do that

Early voting begins Friday across Minnesota. And organizers in Winona County, which has some of the lowest voter turnout numbers in the state, are uniting for one cause: not a specific candidate or political party, but simply registering people to vote.
 
Associate Justice Theodora Gaïtas sworn in to Minnesota Supreme Court

Associate Justice Theodora Gaïtas took the oath of office Monday, formally joining the Minnesota Supreme Court during a ceremony in St. Paul. Her addition will again make the state’s highest court woman-led. And her placement on the will make the seven-member court entirely appointed by DFL governors.
👮 Washington state cancels use-of-force training by Kim Potter, ex-Minnesota cop who killed Daunte Wright. The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis board canceled the “Remorse to Redemption: Lessons Learned” after learning Potter was tapped to lead it and tell her side of Daunte Wright’s killing during it the event.

🚧 The summer of massive road construction season continues into the fall. While summer is winding down, road construction season continues in Minnesota. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan used a mall parking garage rooftop to highlight the nearly 200 infrastructure projects happening across the state.

🗳️ A secretive group recruited far-right candidates in key U.S. House races, including Minnesota. It could help Democrats. Thomas Bowman, 71 and disabled after a kidney transplant, said he believes he likely was recruited to run against Democratic Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota to split the conservative vote.

⚾ Cleveland Guardians rally past Minnesota Twins 4-3 to tighten grip on Central Division. The win moved the Guardians 7 1/2 games ahead of the defending division champion Twins. Minnesota's division chances are essentially done, and every loss puts a possible wild-card spot in jeopardy.

🏈 The revamped and revitalized Vikings are thriving behind a much deeper defense. The Vikings are undefeated behind their carefully revamped defense and a revitalized quarterback in Sam Darnold. They beat the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers 23-17 with six sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.

📱 TikTok argued against its U.S. ban in court on Monday. Here’s what happened. TikTok’s survival in the U.S. is riding on the outcome of the hearing. Federal judges peppered both the Justice Department and TikTok with skeptical questions about the ban, which takes effect in January.
🎧 Questions linger for a Minnesota adoptee after China ends international adoptions. As China shuts down its international adoption program, Minnesotan Grace Shu Gerloff hopes there can be more conversation in the future about the root causes of adoption and how to better support families in crisis.

🎧 Eagan native Mallory Weggemann reflects on her Paralympic wins. She took silver in the women’s 50-meter butterfly and gold in the women’s 200-meter individual medley. Weggemann spoke with MPR News host Cathy Wurzer about her wins.
