This weekend, TOON rang in 10 years of publishing children’s books at the MoCCA Arts Festival . As Calvin Reid noted in PW: "Exhibitors, Fans Keep Growing at MoCCA Arts Fest 2018." We were in great company alongside the many forces of indie and graphic publishing, with over 400 exhibitors, 41 book signings, 12 panels, and 7,000 attendees. Among the highlights: our own Editorial Director, Françoise Mouly , was on a panel with Mark Siegel of First Second Books to celebrate the prominent place of children's comics in the contemporary scene. She recapped the story of TOON: “When I had my own kids, I realized that there was a whole other dimension in which comics imprint into your brain.” "I wanted to cure an ill: there were no good contemporary children’s comics." Françoise Mouly and Mark Siegel Quoting from Calvin Reid in Publishers Weekly : Just released: Jaime Hernandez's The Dragon Slayer "Toon Books publisher Françoise Mouly was promoting celebrated comics artist Jaime Hernandez (Love & Rockets) and his first work for children, The Dragon Slayer , a collection of Latin American folktales published simultaneously in English and Spanish language editions. Mouly also showed off advance copies of Ivan Brunnetti’s 3X4 , which uses comics to introduce arithmetic to young readers; and We Are All Me by Jordan Crane, a beautifully rendered and quite remarkable picture book for young readers that manages to visually convey a sense of the connections across the biological world from the cellular level of the individual on through the vast range of human, animal and plant life." Fall 2018: 3x4 by Ivan Brunetti Kevin McCloskey brought a snail and a smile... ..to sign copies of his upcoming TOON Book: Snails Are Just My Speed! Celebrating the publication of The Dragon Slayer Jaime Hernandez told ghost stories to a packed house... and introduced the fables that inspired his first-ever children's book (and TOON's latest release): " The Dragon Slayer is kind of a Cinderella story. I liked that she had to do everything. She would go out and get it done." The full presentation where Jamie introduced his first children's book, The Dragon Slayer , will soon be available on The Society of Illustrators YouTube page . Liniers was a MoCCA Guest of Honor ... Huddling at the TOON table: Françoise Mouly, Ricardo (aka Liniers) and Kimberly Guise A "World of Liniers" panel had Ricardo discuss his career with Jarad Greene from The Center for Cartoon Studies . Fans who lined up for the book-signing were rewarded with book-painting! You can still catch the exhibit, Art by Liniers: Macanudo, The New Yorker, and Good Night, Planet at the Society of Illustrators. It was a wonderful time catching up with old friends... ...and new!
