Jobless rate falls below 3%; Charleston County at 1.4%

The state unemployment rate dropped to a record low of 2.9% in September, according to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce. The number of S.C residents who are working grew to a record 2,311,479. Charleston County had the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 1.4%.

State to get $4M in medical device settlement

The $4 million awarded to the state is part of a $116.9 million settlement 41 states agreed to with Johnson & Johnson and its Ethicon Inc. subsidiary for deceptive marketing of medical devices.

Drought causing ‘farming crisis’ statewide

Farmers reported lower crop yields to the S.C. Drought Response Committee, and livestock farmers say they will have to pay more to feed their herds. Dorchester County was upgraded to moderate drought status, and Charleston and Berkeley counties were upgraded to incipient.
