September Monthly Briefing: Measuring the ‘S’

Our views on what matters
If you thought the S in ESG stood for “soft”, think again. Our contributors this month tackle the hard issues head on – racial exploitation, sweatshops, living wages and more. They show how companies are addressing them all along their extended value chains, from suppliers to their own operations and onwards.

A common theme is the need for management systems and robust metrics, with a highlight on our own, newly expanded, model, B4SI, which has grown out of the original LBG approach (disclosure: I was one of its founders).
Let me highlight especially our guest contributors – Matt Sparkes from Linklaters making the case to “step up and be counted” and Eduardo Moura from EDP arguing that that the S is at the heart of ESG, because it’s all about the people. Hear, hear!

If you find that the multiplicity of issues under the S heading can be daunting, and measuring them even more so, think about people and what matters to them – even better, ask them. S for stakeholders, perhaps; certainly, let's have an L for listening.

There’s more than one lane on the road to sustainability

In a turn of events which isn’t entirely unsurprising, S&P has removed Tesla stock from its ESG index. This is helping bring forward the debate over the importance of proper due diligence in the social and governance aspects of sustainability.

Living Wage: ensuring fair remuneration across the value chain.

As the economy continues to squeeze the wallets of companies and workers alike, what are the advantages to firms of increasing workers’ pay by adopting a commitment to a living wage across the value chain?
