More smoke, more wrecks: Just over two weeks after the massive I-55 pileup that killed seven motorists and injured dozens of others, more wrecks — this time on I-10 in New Orleans East — claimed another life and injured eight. This time, however, weather officials say fog didn't play a role in the crashes, just the smoke from the nearby swamp fire that continues to burn. The NOPD said late Tuesday that additional patrols from the city and state police will be deployed early Wednesday morning to assist if visibility worsens, and may even close portions of I-10 if necessary.
DA asks for more money: District Attorney Jason Williams has asked for a roughly $4 million increase in funding from the city, saying it's crucial to maintaining the momentum his office has achieved fighting crime. But it marks a departure from Williams' philosophy when he was on the city council and voted against funding increases for his predecessor. Jillian Kramer has the details.
The cost of compliance: Jefferson Parish residents on both sides of the Mississippi River have complained for years about noxious odors emanating from the parish's landfill in Waggaman. Now, state regulators are asking the parish to pay $700,000 to settle alleged violations at the dilapidated dump. Blake Paterson has the story.
