Dear reader,

As we approach the weekend, I would prefer to be bringing you better news about the coronavirus pandemic in Northern Ireland.

However, for what seems like the umpteenth time in the last fortnight, the Province has broken its record for the number of new coronavirus cases in a 24-hour period.

Another 1,080 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed today by the Department of Health. Before today, the highest number of infections was recorded a week ago on October 2 when 934 people tested positive. The number of new cases in Northern Ireland has also doubled within seven days. However, there have been no further coronavirus related deaths.

Earlier today the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) said the death toll relating to Covid-19 now stands at 906 after it identified four additional deaths.

It also emerged on Friday that Sinn Fein’s Northern Ireland leader Michelle O’Neill is self-isolating after a close family member received a positive Covid-19 test. She must now isolate for 14 days and work remotely.

These are very trying times, I hope you are able to enjoy your weekend.

Stay safe.

Alistair Bushe,

Editor
